I did tortoise with a .020 white line behind it on this curly african mahogany 12 fret dred. I laminated the white line to the tortoise, and it does give the tortoise a ruby like backlit effect that is very cool indeed.

sorry my pics stink, it is much nicer looking in real life.

Matt, was this the unit you brough to ASIA this year?
It looks great in the picture, I like the appointments a lot, the fretboard trim is nice.

I like to do the same thing on binding fretboards - thin maple veneer first, then the tortoise, to really highlight the figure in it. Also makes the fretboards look cool from the top side as well, a border effect.

Lance, nope I sold that one about a month ago. This one is going to be strung up today hopefully.

John, Yes I saw this binding scheme on the Martin Peter Rowan signature 000-18, and was dying to try it.

At first I just liked the white line added and I was`nt really thinking about the backlit effect, so that was sort of a surprize bonus.

for the record: i would never claim to be the original guy at any aspect of guitar making.
I am more of a history buff, than an artist i guess.
I owe everything I know to my predecessors, and i consider myself very lucky to have access to so many fine builders.

Matt,

That is a beauty! I really like the binding. What method did you use for the position markers on the fretboard binding?

Got any more pictures of the guitar?

Thanks Jeff, I used regular white plastic dot rods, I drill them in after the f-board is bound.

Hi Terry, I used a tortoise end graft with no white behind it, and it looks fine. you dont really miss the fact that its not backlit.

thanks again, heres a shot of the back
